After graduating from high school (barely) Richard Huang decided to study abroad in Japan, experiencing the vast car culture. He totalled out his 2005 Subaru Outback, he sold his other vehicle, a 1995 Accord that he had been working on for a few years. Naturally, from his experiences, he wanted a car that he could wrench on upon getting into Japan and beginning his studies. He looked forward to the possibilities in Japan. Shortly before moving and was left with nearly nothing. Before leaving, he made sure to arrange for a small appartment in Southern Osaka, near the mountains. His parents granted him V% 20000 to start a life in Japan.

While walking around in a nearby business district I spotted a disheveled S13 sitting on the side of the road, rotting away as it would seem. I walked into the store that it appeared to be parked in front of and began to use my horrid Japanese to ask about it. Long story short, it used to be someone's drift project until it was wrecked, received the front end off an RPS13. However it did have an extremely nice (in comparison to the outside) CA18 Turbo. I asked the owner if he would sell it for V$5500, he fired back with V$6000, and I promptly purchased it. The car is rattlecan black, with alot of clearcoat damage. By looking at the chassis it appears to have originally been a dark blue.

Ah I remember my first experience with an s13, as those were good times. And this one may look rough on the outside, but the ca18 is a strong motor when in healthy condition. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Also, Welcome!

Ah, finally you've grabbed your first wheels! Welcome! :D
There's relatively no worries about visual aesthetics since it's an S13......you can do just about anything over it and it'll look good ;)
For now, I'd say keep the CA as well since it's still fine and healthy :D

Now that I've finally moved in, I decided to go explore. Jumped on the highway early this morning to see what I could see. Saw a bunch of the beautiful coastal urban areas surrounding Osaka. A passing driver in a white Toyota Altezza snapped this picture of me while cruising.

Upon my first inspection of the S13, I was able to notice (as well as feel) that the rear struts were very much blown, giving the car it's very distinct and strange stance. On my journey I picked up four Greddy Type S coilovers and appropriate springs from a used racing parts store outside of Osaka. The coilovers were already assembled with springs and ready to be installed. They ran me V$575. By the time I got home I decided it was time to go to sleep. I decided it was best to install them the next day. I have also begun searching for a daily in my area. Obviously it has to be something fun that I can get my hands dirty with. However, the S13 is holding up fine for the time being. Just gotta get the kinks worked out.

Welcome! Eh, that S13 you got could be in better shape for 6000 but hey, at least the engine is all good. The rear suspension definitely looks blown, i hope coilovers will do the trick!

When I finally returned to Osaka, I was able to find a quiet DIY garage that I could install my coilovers, it cost me V$ 14 for the hour of garage time that I needed to install them. They were able to supply me with all the tools I needed to get my new coilovers installed and properly adjusted. I raised the rear of the car and used to camber adjustment to fix some of the rear camber.

Alright guys so long story short, today I went to pick up some goodies for the S13 at the local junkyard, and I may have purchased myself an EG Civic as a daily. Looks like it's been in a pretty good wreck. However, it looks like nothing that a little TLC can't fix. I will keep you guys posted.

She only has the D16 in her. Some low grade coilovers and Watanabe reps with some bald tires. I've got my work cut out for me, but for now she will make a good little run-around car.

Can't wait to see where I will be able to go with this one!
She cost me just V$1500! Over 256,xxx miles though, I will update you all on the work that I do to this beaut.

As it's an EG Civic, obligatory [ C O O L V I B R A T I O N S ] comment is obligatory ;)
Joking aside, it's one of my fav Civics as well as FWD cars in general, I'm glad you picked up one! :D

I believe classic (pre-2006 to specify) Civics are one of the easiest things in the world to fix. Well not literally, but I'm sure you'll get it back in action in next to no time. Good luck my man!

Made some progress on the S13. Failed to mention that yesterday at the scrap yard I managed to snag a pretty clean PS13 front end. Well, I got it installed today and lets just say it looks much better. Also, after countless letters from the government telling me to register my cars, I finally got around to it. I even have the stickers to prove it! Today I also visited Upgarage, they had a sale on some 16 inch SSR Longchamps that I simply couldn't pass up. Only V$ 1500 for wheels with some decent Potenza tires already mounted and balanced. Rushed home to get them installed, in my haste I quickly fastened my plate to the rear "bumper" using zipties :)

Pretty happy with the results. If anyone needs a JDM RPS13 front end, I've got one. Not in the cleanest shape but I will let it go for V$ 20 if you pay shipping!

Awww i kinda liked the Onevia, it's not that common in Japan too! I like the Longchamps you got but i suggest thinner tires for a better stance.

That Civic looks quite promising despite its high mileage, i hope it will be a good daily :)

Alright guys so this morning I did some work on my "daily". Put some zipties on the front bumper so it actually stays up instead of dragging on the ground.

If anyone knows a good way to get that pesky junkyard writing off, let me know!

Thanks for all the support guys!

Alright guys, I messed around with the suspension just a little more, still need a bit more clearance beacause I rub hella right now. Anyways, I am here laying in bed with my mind circulating full of ideas for the PS13. Only issue is I don't know if this car is worth my time. Might consider selling it sooner than later.

Anyways, tomorrow morning I will be headed up to towards Tokyo for a trackday at Tsukuba, might try my hand at this whole "drifting" thing. If anyone in the Tokyo area would let me crash at their house for a night or two that would be much appreciated.

Hey I live at Tsukuba (the city, not the track. The track itself is located at Shimotsuma city, a neighbouring city), my crib is just 18 kms from the track. Feel free to come here if you want to! :D

Or if you want to stay at downtown Tokyo, I've got some contacts as well :D

Hey Smoke, Left my house yesterday. Just got done at the trackday, mind if I crash at your place? PM me the address and I will swang by.

I failed to mention that I got some used tires for the S13, they are the same Bridgestone tires as before, just lower profile. I was actually able to find someone in Osaka to trade tires with.

Anyways the drive down through Tokyo was wild as always. Pulled up to Tsukuba around noon. The car was not able to pass the tech inspection because my battery was loosely secured in the trunk. I was fortunately able to borrow a ratchet-strap from a fellow racer, who didn't hesitate to offer me one of his older ratchet straps.
Anyways, I was able to get the hang of this whole drifting thing rather easily, the S chassis sure makes it easy! First couple corners I understeered into the sand pretty hard. I was able to gain more and more angle with every lap. The CA18 turbo is definitely an underdog when it comes to sliding!

After the trackday, I cruised into the city of Tsukuba to crash at Big Smoke's place. This guy is totally gnarly when it comes to his builds. Mad respect for him. Anyways, as I write this I am laying in bed offloading the images from my camera into my editing software. I dropped a few of the raw shots above for you guys. Next time I will try to bring my GoPro so I can snag some POV videos. If anyone knows a good way to mount it let me know. Before I leave Smoke's I will be sure to slide him some V$ for his hospitality.

Update! So today I spent the day sanding the fenders, hood, and bumper on the S13. Started the day off by stopping at the hardware store, picked up some sandpaper. Drove to a paint store in Osaka and grabbed some cheap primer and wetsanding materials. Anyways, got home by 8:30AM and began sanding as much paint off as possible. Needless to say, the S13 will be one color here pretty soon. Might not be the greatest paint out their but I am optimistic for a decent final product. Also, school has gotten a lot tougher, and I have been debating going back to the states. I will keep you guys posted with what I want to do, and if I decide to go, I will be sure to give my supporters the jump on buying my S13. I also got a raise at my job. Now that I am rolling in more cash, you can expect some big things out of the cars.

She looks rough right now, but don't worry, she will be back lookin fresh soon!

Good news guys! More progress on the S13 and what I would consider to be pretty close to the final product of my PS13. Went through and painted and clearcoated/ wetsanded the living crap out of the front end. Was able to get a couple rattlecans of the factory black paint used on the S13 for super cheap at a local paint store!
Anyways, I am waiting for the paint to dry and made wanted to give you guys an update.
