So I was browsing around on tokyo(dot)craigslist(dot)jp and I found a gen 1 miata with a CA18DET for sale. It's offered at V$4,000.
I feel like this is quite a good deal, considering I also NEED a daily to go to work with.
It's got a CA18DET with 48k miles on the motor, and the shell has something like 150k miles on it. It's been lowered on some sort of cheap coils, has a couple rust spots here and there, but aside from that, it's practically in perfect conditions! Might go pick it up either today or tomorrow!
