When you are lazy and don't want to scratch all the stuff.

It isn't the best way to do such things, but if you want put 3D logo on something like rim cap very quickly, it becomes handy.

First, start of preparing your base surface that you want to put the engraved object.

Then, import your Adobe Illustrator shape file. Note that for 3DS Max 5 you have to use Illustrator 3 (!) format.

You can tune it in 3DS Max, but it's not neccessary. If you want to go really low-poly, then you can drop interpolation to 2 or even less (it depends on how complex your shape is).

When you have your shape ready, apply Bevel modifier from Modifier List.

As you can see, now the shape is filled with polygons. Set height of bevel to something other than 0, and set Start in Capping off.

Convert object to Editable Poly, choose border selection mode and select all borders.

Move them up over the top, to make End cap (from Bevel modifier) on bottom. You can also remove it.

It's almost done. Now fit it to your surface, put it as close as possible.

Now, materials. You can use whatever you want, just make sure it's single-sided.

(two-sided/single-sided)
By that photo you can clearly say why.

Depending on decal you may want to flip it. It's not neccessary, but sometimes it makes it look better. (note that we already flipped it once).

And, that's pretty much all. You can tweak it however you want, just keep it looking good ;)
You can for example attach it to base, use same material and remap them both.

And use darker texture for inner polygons

You can also make more complex parts, not just flat caps, but this isn't related to this tuto, it's your problem to make it fit :P

Sweeet! Now I can make 3-Dimensional badges! Thanks!
Also, with 3DS Max 2016, it can support far more advanced Illustrator files. Ha.

Yeah, but it's a lot more job, and sometimes boolean just screws the shape (when it's more complex)
