Hmmm well three choices are actually pretty good but the Sedan is out because it's bigger than the other two. Personally I'd go for the MK2 or EG Hatch.

Interesting topic :)

Also buying my first car in 1 - 4 months...

Would like own Alfa 75 or 164.. but:

Not very reliable
Winter coming (-15 to -30 C)
And very small choice in Finland:

4 Alfa 164 for sale (mileage: 260 000km - 334 000km)
7 Alfa 75 for sale (mileage: 200 000km - 250 000km)

+ taxes and insurance costs are almost same per year than my budged for the car.

Another I'm looking for is 3 gen Prelude..

But I find only one for sale.. and its mileage is +300 000km

Welcome to Finland.

Maybe I should just buy B Vectra, mk1 Avensis, Volvo S40 or something.

Then I was here thinking we had shitty cars in the Netherlands...

I bought my Corsa B with the C20XE (and registered as such) for 1100euro

Well I was too lazy to read all of the answers.

I personally bought an Audi 80 as my first car just because I love it.

When I had to decide between the Civic or Golf I would go with the golf. Its a super relaiable car if you take care of the basic needs of a car.I am working in a VW mechanic shop so I see many Golf Mk2 that are in great condition.
But I think you should get a normal Golf Mk2 not the GTI.I would buy a normal golf and then try to get a GIT engine and swap them. Its quite easy since they both use the same mountings etc.

But thats just my opinion.

@ thyago

I'm a collage student. I've got an JDM EG GLI. I think it's an LX in the US, not sure what you euros call it.
Gas mileage is awesome, Parts for it are cheap and everywhere.
I personally like them more than golfs, as parts are cheaper for them.. but I highly doubt that that'd be a problem for you euro guys.

EG hatches have a load of space in the back as the seats fold down, leaving room for your new rims or other activities ;)
there is room to sleep in the back too.

The only downside of mine is the lack of power, as mine only has a SOHC 1.5l engine.
If you go for an EG, make sure it's got Vtec or you have the money for a conversion straight out of the box.

If you've got any questions feel free to ask :P

Picture related, my car and new BBS rims from a BMW E30 m3

I had a 93 eg hatch USDM. It started as a CX with a 1.5 non vtec. I swapped for a 95 Acura integra LS engine/trans/ecu (1.8 Dohc Non VTEC). I did a few other little odds and ends. Car ran 10.019 in 1/8th mile. No 1/4 in my area though :(

if you build an obd1 civic and use integra drivetrain, use an ecu from an automatic shift car. It has a better tune due to increased power loss through torque converter.

You'd still have to convert the ECU to a manual chip wouldn't you?

So I have this kinda weird idea for my first car. Its still more than 10 months till I can drive on my own, but I'm allready looking for a first car.
Recently I found a weird obsesion with the Volvo 121 Amazon and I do have a few arguments why it could be an ideal first car:
- Its over 40 years old, and in the netherlands that means its taxfree
- Its quite spacious
- In my opinion, its quite a beautifull car
- It has some stance potential:

- Its quite reliable
- There are quite cheap ones available that look very decent

Any thoughts why this would or would not be a good starter?
