The Desert Find

Suppose I should introduce myself first. I'm Matthew Cross - chose the "ShadowPhoenixTar" name because I lost a bet, personally I think it's a bit silly but hey, it's the internet.

Anyway, straight to the point. Me and my buddies were taking a road trip in a pickup truck when we decided to stop for some gas and to get some food, maybe some rest (we've been driving for at least 4 hours prior). However, while we were filling up, I spotted a most peculiar object near the restrooms.

When I approached for a closer look, it turned out to be a Honda S2000, although... not in the very best of conditions. Missing a front bumper, damaged panels and what looked to be damaged suspension, as well. With my curiosity reaching new heights, I walked closer and closer to see what's what.

Either the engine fell off or the suspension's been botched so hard that the oil pan is now acting as the new skidplate. Regardless, I called my buddies over to have a look.

The radiator fell off after I slightly moved it around to take a closer look at the engine, so I decided 'screw it' and just opened the hood without asking for anybody's permission. Indeed, the engine had fallen off and the engine bay's badly bent, too.

From the back, not much damage to be seen although there could be some more underlying problems if the car's properly inspected.

All of this most likely means head-on collision, and the somewhat straight front right quarterpanel means someone at least tried to repair it, then gave up probably due to either realizing how big of a job this might actually be, lack of funds or lack of tools or all of the above. In any case, the manager of the gas station said we could tow the car away for free, since apparently it had been there for quite a long time and has been an eyesore for the entire duration.

I dunno, on one hand I need a car of my own that I can take on track days, on the other hand this seems like a massive piece of work and could potentially cost a crap ton. I've got 20 grand saved up. What do you guys think?

Thanks very much. To be honest I was kind of inspired by all the builds that have been popping up recently so I was actually planning on getting a car at some point in time.

Anyway, we've done our eating and fueling up and have towed the car up to the hitch on the truck. We figured why not, costs us nothing and if it's too big of a job we can always store it away at some place in case we ever need some S2000 parts. On the road right now as I speak (or type), so I'll be able to get a proper assessment of the car when we get home and to a proper repair shop.

Nice find , but there may be damage to the chassis, and it can not always be repaired and left in the factory dimensions
I would offer 3k max for that car, no more, because it requires too much work

It took us roughly two hours to get to our home town, and after we dropped a few of our guys off, me and two others headed straight for the nearest repair shop. After giving the boffins another two hours to inspect the car completely, they told us it was a complete write-off.

The whole front end of the car was bent so hard down to the X-bone frame that even if they spent vast amounts of money and time into repairing it, it still wouldn't have any sort of structural stiffness or rigidity and would never get insured. However, there are some parts on the wreckage that are worth some money. For instance, the engine. A surprise to us, but apparently the block, the crank, the head and the pistons are all intact after the mechanics swiftly lifted the engine out of the engine bay (it was being held in by towing rope when we were towing the car with us). Everything else, like the fuel injectors, oil pan (naturally), transmission etc. were of little use. A few other things were valuable too, like the rear bumper and tail lights along with the interior which was mostly intact (save for the airbags which have fired off).

After all this, the chief mechanic gave me an offer. If we gave them this wreckage, which they can then scavenge and sell whatever they find that's valuable to make a profit, they will give us a rolling S2000 chassis that's in good condition. I said 'yes, sounds like a bargain', and handed him the money which was V$2,450, then immediately took off, while I was left feeling rather pleased.

Soon, however, I realized why he made that offer, and why it was so cheap.

It had no engine, no lights, no seats, no wiring and the wheels weren't included, they're only there so the car could roll into the shop. So really, not much to speak of. But I took it anyway, because it's surely an improvement over the totaled wreck that I brought in, and because I can actually work on it in the future, even if it's slowly.

So now I'm currently at my house with my ca- sorry, chassis in the garage. What do I do first? Get some wheels and try to find an engine?

Actually it’s an AP1 S2000 that had AP2 rims on it - don’t know why but nevertheless I suppose an F22C1 could work, depending on how expensive something like that would be. Would fitting an F22C1 instead of an F20C be a better choice, or perhaps something else?

Put whatever you want in it, but if you are going for something else than F-series you might run into some weight balance problems and so on because of the steering rack being pushed so far back. So go with original F20C imo. Great engine, especially go for JDM Spec one as it is more powerful, I can source you one here in Japan or even sell a complete swap from my S2K.

No, actually it is the same shit imo. Japan spec F20 is the most powerful engine from the F-series.

How much does a Japan-spec F20 cost? I might as well get one now while I try to polish off some pther things in and around the car.

Ordered. Gonna take a few days to get here to the US from Japan but I think it’ll be worth it.

((let's just say the engine is coming from japan into the USA))

It shouldn't be long until the engine arrives. In the meantime, I've taken a look around town and found some second-hand AP1 wheels at a car parts shop, so I snagged a set for around V$559. Also found some AP2 headlights for V$700, pretty pristine condition so they were pretty pricey. After that, I came back to the shop to get the wheels installed and the headlights, which cost me around V$1,200 for the labour. The boffins talked about ballasts or something like that, but reassured me that putting AP2 lights on an AP1 is doable, so I left them to it.

Here's how it stands now. Still missing tail lights, hood, seats and a steering wheel, but I'm pretty hopeful.

Damn, V$1200 for labor is a handful, gotta complain about that. But anyway, I see tons of potential in this S2K build. Cheers fellow Pinoy and fellow Honda owner!
