So my dad's been considering buying and importing a Toyota Land Cruiser 90 from Japan, but I've discovered the DVLA won't let you register a vehicle on the road without a speedometer reading in MPH instead of KPH.
As far as I've seen, it's as easy as swapping the standard gauge cluster for a UK spec on of the same year, but would that actually work? I'm thinking the ECU may have some hard-wired thing where the speed can only be sent to the gauge in KPH, but is that actually true or can you just swap them? Thanks in advance. P.S. This is cheaper than getting the OEM gauge converted into reading MPH, because entire binnacles for things are only like £100 or so. |

This account is pretty much dead, my wip is dead, gom (also dead) killed starquest and the hdd it was on died.

Lol, the speed is given by a sensor which gives a simple input to the speedometer, which then convert it in whatever format you need. Commonly the sensor is on the output diff/tranny gear and reads how many times it does a full revolution, which allows knowing the speed with the original wheels - and that's why when you use bigger or smaller wheels you end up having wrong speed on the instrument.
Often the speedos are identical for the different measures, they just use a different print, so you could also simply open the gauge and stick over it a mph thingo(seen it done, the other way around). Anyways, technically you should be able to swap the entire gauge too, just search online to see if it used different electrical system for the various countries or different years and then you'll know if it's a straight swap or not(though commonly it's always the same even if the system changes, take as an example my berlingo, it born with either siemens or bosch electrical system but the gauge is always the same so you can swap it between the various versions). |

So your'e saying it might work, but it may need some other parts too, right? I know how it's read, and I had an idea that it may just be the way the ECU sends it to the gauge.
In that case, you'd have to get the ECU re-programmed to do what I said lol. I've seen people just swap the gauge faces before, but that might not work with everything seeing as it still may have a different input of units. I'll look into it though. Those speedo faces so easy to source, holy s**t.  Or I could just get a converter from the sender to the dash, they're also easy to find.
