Hello my friends, my name is Martin Petrovich and I would like to introduce myself to you all. I'm 19 years old and live in Vladivostok, Russia. I have been saving up money for a while and last week I bought my first car! It is a 1990 Subaru Legacy from Japan. (( Online ad: *LINK* ))

It is not in the best of shapes but I hope to change that as soon as I can. Cars like this are common here because Vladivostok is one sea apart from Japan. The traffic here is mostly a boring old and rusty version of Japan because some cars from there are very cheap.

Anyway, I hope to share more of my progress and adventures with this car in the near future.

Thanks for the offers guys, I'll keep them in mind when I visit.
Today I wanted to find something to replace my broken and mismatched left door mirror so I visited one of the local junkyards. The yard guy said they had a Legacy with the same color in the yard so I followed him to it. Along the way I couldn't help but notice the cruel reminder of the fate of some of these cars.

Sitting there against the wall was a Legacy RS like mine, but an STi version instead. With heavy rear right quarterpanel damage, it sat there gathering dust and rust.

I asked the yard guy if he could tell me anything about it, but he said the only thing he knows is that a young man in his mid/early 20's dropped it off at the lot, presumably after binning it into a tree or light pole.

There isn't much I can really get off it, the man said the engine was already pulled out when they got it. The front bumper and rear wing are in pretty good condition, so I could come around again and nab those for my car.
Anyways, I did get the mirror for my car which shortly after I installed.
Stay safe on the road fellas!

Well I decided that I want the bumper because I like the way it looks with this lip, so I went over and bought it, but I decided to keep my car without a wing for now. I also spent some time today fixing a few rust spots, dents and scratches around the car. Haven't bothered putting the license plate on yet as I'm going to have to paint the bumper soon anyway.

It's currently with it's stock non-turbo EJ (EJ18 if I'm not wrong) with an auto gearbox, but I'm probably going to swap it for a manual gearbox EJ20/25.

With the help of my uncle I have aquired a small garage to work on my car in. Today I started painting some bits around the car like the scratches and rust I repaired and also the front bumper. Some parts I painted while on the car...

... others I took off since it was easier.

I also decided to install a roof rack on the car and side mounted license plates for extra street cred. Didn't like how the rear plate sat so I move it to the side, I want to get some American or Japanese license plate now to fill in the gap, otherwise it will annoy me. It's starting to take shape, next up should be the bigger more performance orientated mods like engine and suspension.

Hello, please exucuse me for not posting lately, I've had finals and other stuff to worry about but I'm back. In the mean time I've done this and that to the car which I'll show off all of now.

First off I did a little stickerbombing of the roof rack, and I think the end result is pretty sweet, although it may need some final touching up. (( When I was editing this the template was super stretched, so I need to fix the squished stickers. ))

I also got this custom license plate ordered and delivered along with the frame of the website so it can fill up the empty space on the rear bumper and I think it turned out pretty cool.

Now, the next thing up is a pretty big upgrade, I managed to find myself a reasonably priced EJ25 STi engine! And thought I might aswell swap out the old dual cam EJ18 for it. Here it is hanging around and beeing pretty next to the car:

Next up I drained up the old engine of all fluids and disconnected any wiring and piping before pulling it out. (( please pretend this is an ej18 thank you ))

After spending some hours over the bonnet the new engine was all ready and hooked up, I just needed to turn the key and hear her roar and oh my was it a wonderful exhaust note.

Of course the first thing I did was take it out on the road to try it out and I was surprised about the speed it had gained. Now that it does have more power though, I see how it's starting to lack a little in terms of tires, brakes and suspension, so those things are next on my list to sort out. A friend of mine came with me and helped take this cool shot of the Legacy in action:

(( Roof Rack Stickers: -20 V$
License plate + frame: -50 V$
EJ25 STi engine + Transimission: -3500 V$
3x Paycheck: +1125 V$))

Haha, finally ripping the Subie I see! Good that you swapped out that old motor, could be sold for some spare cash to spend on the main motor. Looks good as always!

Got some exciting new stuff done today!

First off two new stickers which are a must for any modern day car enthusiast:

Now onto the good part. Got news that a friend of a friend was selling the daily rims of his drift car since he got a new pair. Naturally I saw a good chance to improve the looks of the Legacy and went over to strike a deal. Ended up grabbing em' for 900 V$! A steal for these crazy purple Rotiform Six's! Stuffed them all (somehow) in the trunk, tied it up so it wouldn't bounce around and headed home.

I also forgot to mention that I god my hands on some sweet new suspension for the car. H&R Street Performance coilovers! Though that along with the new shoes I might as well treat her to some nicer legs eh? Anyway, I parked it up in the garage and set to work.

The old suspension already had a bit of trouble keeping up with the new grunt of the EJ25 STi so it had to go. Thankfully it seemed to fit well to the car with minor adjustments needed. Once I put on the wheel and adjusted everything so it fits just right I could just see the transformation.

Multiply that by four and the car has an all new stunning stance to it. It's amazing how much some suspension and a pair of new rims can do to the look of a car.

((EDIT: Financials:
Rotiform Six's: -900 V$
H&R Street Performance: -1500 V$
New stickzies: -10 V$ ))

East Bloc Budget: Boy Racer Done Right

Buy cheap, buy twice!

That's what you always hear or see in discussion of building cars these days; the notion that if you don't spend top dollar on shinier or fancier parts, something will break. Well, Martin P. of Vladivostok, Russia, says no to that with his JDM 1990 Subaru Legacy in a rather interesting fashion.

What's that? You didn't spend five grand on your suspension setup? Wow, enjoy scraping your oil pan outta that pothole!
Would you look at this guy, he doesn't spend a thousand on a ECU. What a chump!

Alright, I'll admit, if those quotes were any more strawman they'd be in a cornfield. But, the theme of including those lines still holds: Money doesn't make the car. The reason why I emailed Martin and scheduled a meetup is because he proves that theme, then goes even further. The real question with this car is, where do you start?

I suppose we could start with the exterior, but that raises more questions: Where the hell do we even start on the outside!?

Stickers are one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest 'modifications' one can do to their car. And this Legacy is in no means lacking: The staples of the online car community are represented fully; MightyCarMods, CarThrottle, and Speedhun- Hey! Wait a minute!

The rear of this Legacy isn't the only one adorned with stickers, the aftermarket roof rack bearing a stickerbomb so great in size, Martin ran out of stickers three quarters across the way! The budget rings true again, as the roofrack only cost a hundred and fifty bucks, and the stickers coming at dirt cheap prices in their own regard.

Readers with a good eye would probably have noticed the dual license plates on the rear. Well, next to stickers, fake plates are decently cheap too, and can add the final edge or a humorous twist to any car. Hence, Martin grabbed himself a "SUBI LYF" vanity plate, and slapped it on, leaving his actual and legal Russian plate off to the side. Nice!

Let's be frank, anyone and their mother can tell that the suspension of this car is not stock. The taut flush of this BC chassis is done by H&R Street Performance coilovers, which Martin tells me came at a great price brand new. Additionally, it doesn't take a wheel nut to know those alloys aren't stock either. The Rotiform Sixes that this car wears were bought off of Martin's friend, who had gotten new wheels for his drift car, ringing in the term of budget: Expect used parts!

Hey, that's not a EJ18! You're right, it's not! Martin had gotten tired of his pitiful base motor, and instead of pouring money into an inferior engine, he decided to go for an outright swap. And swap, he did. The EJ257 that resides in the Legacy now was sourced for an impressively cheap price, and packs a punch. Not surprising, considering how the EJ257s were sold in the US market to power the '04 Impreza Sti's!

I'll give Subaru some credit, I can't think of a single motor of theirs that won't fit in a recent body of theirs without minimal effort. As seen in this picture, the EJ257 looks at home in there, despite the fact that this car left the factory with the much, much smaller EJ18.

All in all, I honestly like what Martin's done and planning with his Subaru. It displays hard work and craftsmanship, rather the badge of "Restored by Who Cares? Customs." It displays earnesty and modesty at the same time. It displays the character that our modern car scene was created by after the second World War. Finally, it displays the sense of creativity that started our hobby, and keeps it thriving today.

Let's just hope it never gets the chance to... Because, it very well can. Even with your new fuel cell, your Pinto is still a "rolling" deathtrap.
