The Swedish Situation The Swedes are quite a curious people. They've given us some of the most niche yet successful things in the world. In the 70s, there was ABBA. in the 80s, there was IKEA. However, from those years and still going on today, the Volvo remains as the most popular Swedish export. So, it's no wonder why in Europe and all over the globe the Volvo has become a staple in nearly all cliques of car culture. From track-day 240s to commuter 850s, and everything in between, the cars from the Swede manufacturer have definitely earned their place in the wide, wacky world of car enthusiasts. So, it's rather understandable that I jumped at the chance to take a look at Smurf's Volvo 850, even if it meant driving up to Washington state in the non-reclinable bucket seats of my FC RX-7, which also gets roughly 15 to the gallon on the highway. Maybe I should have taken the Porsche. I dunno. From 1991 to 1996, over 760,000 Volvo 850s were produced. So, it's exactly the point I made in Grunge to Glory; there's so many, you have to make yours unique! And make it unique, Smurf has definitely done so. The front bumper sports a one off lip from Doge's shop, for starters. Tracing upwards takes us to the yellowed headlights and eBay eyelids. Smurf told me that he had done the yellowing himself with some film, and the eyelids were supposed to come in the factory red, but were so off he decided to spray paint them black and put them on anyway. Keep moving up, and you'll spot the bike rack that actually has a accompanying bike, spotted on the left of the car. As the hood opens and the camera moves up and to the left, a whole new world of this car opens up. We can openly see the impossibly clean interior of Smurf's daily driver, the custom black roof, and no, your eyes are not fooling you, that is not the original longitudinal five cylinder in there. That is, in fact, a 4G63, the same engine that Brian O'Connor fried the piston rings of in Fast and the Furious. Interestingly enough, Smurf is not the person that did the swap. Rather, the previous owner did it with more than likely intentions of showcarship. However, the previous owner hastened the swap, and left it naturally aspirated (not that there's anything wrong with that) and also with the bog standard four speed 2G Eclipse FWD transmission (which is totally not okay). Also seen are the HRE 501s the Volvo sits on, the drop provided by the ever classic cut springs. The rear is completely stock, but this angle is particular goes to show how neat and taut the fitment is on this Swedish shotgun of expression, I still cannot believe that there are no actual coilover kits on this car. Imagine, cutting a spring in your garage and the fitment coming out this well. Insanity, I tell you. Despite the fact that the first 850s are 25 years old now, Smurf's is somehow impeccable in it's sincere cleanliness. I'd be lying if I didn't expect to smell the new car smell when I saw the interior for the first time. In here, not much has happened, aside from Smurf painting over the wood grain of the original interior with the same black that rests on his roof and eyelids. Seriously, look how clean it is! So, I sincerely am a fan of this Swedish shooter of surprising subtle style. (Sorry.) In all seriousness, I love what Smurf has done with his Volvo, especially considering that it's a rather uncommon model to be modified like this, and that he's displayed clear lack of fear and self-doubt when making decisions in this build. Call me a fan, and keep me posted on what happens to this car in the future! Want more? Come see our new central hub for everything Speedhunters. Article archive, online store, and more! @GoverningNick Heey that's pretty good.
so i found a wrecked legacy for V$700 and decided it'd be easier to pull the engine out of this than get one online. We pulled the engine out and handed the shell off to a friend with a legacy so he can pick whatever is left off and send it to the scrap yard. Wrecked Legacy-V$700 Bank Account:V$1698 |

Holy fuck I'm still alive? Oh, ok then. I've been attending a T-TEN school since my last post and that required moving out of state. Because my program is a live-in program i haven't had much need of a car so after selling the Beetle, i tucked the Evolvo and E36 away in storage and said goodbye to my beloved Cascadian homeland. So I'm in Utah now, and pretty much my life revolves around work and school. Recently my school sent us all home for the holidays so i took the opportunity to pick up something for myself. Yup! Another shitbox.
I felt i wasn't going full euro-trash with the Volvo so i went out and picked up a '92 Jetta. Really wanted a 2 door but couldn't find one in decent shape for my price. But this one is all i need for now. Engine- Rebuilt Einvagen GTA ((too lazy find a good mod for a vw)) with DS Blackseries internals and carb'd, butt dyno says around 220hp or so Suspension- Skunk2 coils Brakes- cheap aftermarket rotors and calipers that weren't machined (had a really bad pulsation until we machined them) Wheels- Salad shooters with a hub/spacer thingy (forget what they're called) that allows you to bolt authentic salad shooters on a 4 lug VW Body- Its been a while since i was big into VWs so i can't name all the stuff thats been changed but I'm sure the grill and lights have been changed (mostly because the radiator core support has been cut) Interior- Plaid GTI seats and Nardi wheel (not woodgrain unfortunately) When i get the time I'm going to look at a new project but it might be a little while. |

So as i come closer to the new car, I'd like to reflect on my first.
My older brother use to race Hondas back in the day so Civics always had my eye. One of my brothers buddies wanted see how cheaply he could swap a stock EG to rhd. The result was a lot of sketchy oxy-acetylene cuts and tac welds. He decided it wasn't exactly show-quality (pfff, whatever that means). So thats how i got my hands on it cheap cheap cheap. When i first got her, she was full monster truck status. Not sure what wheels were on her but they had to go, a long with the high profile tires and stock ride height. After my brother found out i got a Honda he was stoked. So stojed in fact, he sold me a set of Work Equips and found me a set of adjustable coils, both for a deep discount. I even found myself a hatch wing and rear lip (had to cut the muffler off to fit it). A while later my brother decided to move out and made me a deal. Anything i could dig out of the garage that fit my car i could keep. The only thing i could find was the Webers and crazy ass exhaust (both came off his drag ef), he looked at me sideways when i told him i was gonna use them. Had to spray the head cover to match. Also found a new lip and fogs. Looking back, this is where i should have left it. But of course the paint and wheels contradict (my actual reason for rattle canning it) |

@Skip but i love the look of early 2000's builds, as long as its not all cosmetic.
@Monkey yea now i want another. I would gave to do things way different this time around, this thing was a fucking ticket machine. It was so bad i could only take back roads because if a cop saw me it was a guaranteed stop. |

Sooo after a too long of a wait, I've finally got the car. I actually flew to Vegas to stay with my sister and pick this baby up. Had to register and insure it to her place (which is why it has Nevada plates) and drive it back to SLC.... through the mountains.... in January.
Suuuper sketchy with the whole no TCS/ABS and fairly bald rear tires and all. Soo aesthetically, it has TE37 reps and a Silva front clip with some random lip. But that's about it. Under all the sheet metal, plastic, and I'd assume bondo, There's an RB20(with a faint piston slap when cold), Tein coils, and lsd diff. Oooh and it has Nardi(i think, i can't really remember right now) and a Recaro seat with Takata 6 point harness. I have a general idea of what i want to do with it but nothing precise. |

Soo last night i went to pick up some new shoes for the Jetta. The spacers for the Salad Shooters were a bitch to get off (reminded me how much i hate lug bolts), i swear the previous owner impacted the shit out of the spacer.
I like the look of the Meshes more than the Salad Shooters and since their 16's whereas the Salad Shooters were 17's, i had to max out the coils to minimize gap. Now i have to get new spacers to get rid of this horrendous offset. Think I'll probably sell the old wheels and spacers to help fund it. Ohh and a closer look at the interior. I almost wish the 240 was still 4x100 so i could fit the Shooters on it, but it's already been converted to 5x100. |

Guys, i did it again. So the other day i saw this '04 RSX Type S with 90k up for 6.5k. You know i had to get it. The Jetta is still in the family for the moment, but i need to sell it to recover from the massive hit to my savings account. I should probably explain my financial situation while we're here. I've been saving up for something special for a long while, which is why i haven't been adding my finances to my posts. I haven't touched my savings at all until i bought this, and i paid in full. Stock ride height lasted about 3 days.
Sold the Jetta and Salad Shooters then decided to treat myself for the accomplishment. Got H&R Ultra Low coils and 18" BBS LMs wrapped in overly stretched tires. Kinda tapped out with what to do from here, i still want a new engine for the s13 but i don't want to spend too much money so that's on hold for now. |

So I managed to bully my friend into selling me the steelies off his old car. You might notice the Volvo hubcaps, well back in the day he stole them off his moms car and rocked them on his Civic for awhile. They look so small with all that ground clearance, gotta do something about that. New suspension components come in sometime next week. |
