hello yes I wanna follow a trend pls gib attention
bought a 1997 E39 520i for my first car, needs love and work was a Sixt rental whore car for the first year, then got sold off to a private person. Sold further in 2014, some work was put into it, then sold around 2017 (?) to a third guy, who didn't register it and just left it parked for 3 months. Seller was sketchy af, and I think I know why: -camshaft sensor broken -needs brakes all around with handbrake pads too -trunk sits not flush -crash damage in the rear (seller didn't tell me, nice. hopefully only parking ding) -needs about everything serviced, from filters to all fluids -has rust (seller also hid it from me, nice 2x.) -driver seat torn -blinker stalk doesn't turn off after you turn the wheel back -headlight lenses blurry It has only 4 options, auto A/C, eletronic sunroof (doesn't work with the switch, only with key, makes bad noises), smokers package (ugh) and the paint. this car is naked. I bought a lot of stuff already, just need to put them on. Camshaft sensor, brake discs and pads, headlight lenses clear front, clear taillights, inspection set, retrofit cupholder front(yes this was an option back then), rear door trims from an ebay partout car, blinker stalk too, warning triangle (broke this one myself, lol), driver passenger stripping, custom floor mats, 4:3 navigation (planning to put a raspberry pi in it), Styling 66 17" what I still need: clear side blinkers, new rear brake discs (ordered the wrong ones, ventilated), handbrake pads, battery charging device (battery is dead lol), new trunk gas struts its stored in a underground garage atm and will be for like 4 months or so till I pull it out, and bring it to inspection. If it passes, nice. If not, straight to Poland and will recieve the easiest and cheapeast rust reparation so it passes at least once. In 2 years I'll have to see, if it passes again I'll drive it to the ground, if not either rip the interior out and drift it or partout and upgrade to one with a bigger engine on another note I have these 3x E46 Styling 34 which I thought were OEM Styling 31, how much do yall think can sell these for? All 3 have old bad tires, so drift spares only. I thought about 80 bucks to pickup, I can't use them anywhere, not even as storage rims. The steelie is the original spare with the original tire from 1997, wow |

# David_2709 : it's not OEM, they're from Febi yeah but the factory design is awful, they break easily and cant hold anything lol.. this from ebay is pretty popular, not sure how good it is to hold stuff tho. |

whatya mean more options? It has the essentials, electric front windows, but manual rear, tapedeck, manual mirror
edit: forgot to add that it has heated and electric side mirrors, if I break one I have a *lot* of fun getting a new one. Might also be worth half of what I paid for the car Added 47 seconds later: # Daniel : yeah but the factory design is awful, they break easily and cant hold anything lol..I'll check it out when it's back on the road, for now sitting under the blanket that I posted |

only way this could be less optioned is if it was a slicktop and had manual front windows lol..
positive thing is that there is less stuff that can break, and as long as rust doesnt kill it, it can last for a looong time. |

we don't talk about the rocker panel rust... neither the front quarterpanel rust nor the left mirror rust
have heard that my color is rather rare, I'll have fun finding a proper partout car on ebay for parts |

oxfordgrün metallic
I don't like the pampersbomber, I don't need /that/ much space and I think the tourings look a bit boring. E36 touring looks way better |

so does every BMW lol
I found only one ebay partout car that I can take body panels from (touring), there are ~30 others in other colors, mostly grey I was looking at lowering springs and ez lip for the front already even though I should fix it first, I'm still a dumb teenager I guess. 220 bucks for 30/30 Vogtland springs sounds okay.. |

I paid 2k for the car, I aint spending 800 for a complete set of coils on a base model 520i when 220 springs do the job aswell. I will never go so fast that the coils will make a difference, I'd need to invest in power and proper tires first

coilovers = stance
nobody buys a 520i for performance xd are they even turbocharged? i guess not right? then you won't get power out of it anyways, if you don't want to spend a fortune |

Jesus people let him do what he likes smh
If I would you I'd do a bigger engine first then springs but each to its own i guess(you can get a 2.5 at the price of those springs and its more future proof for mods than the 2.0) |

don't need coils, like I said, I bought the car for 2 grand and I do not want to spend 800 on coils if the stock suspension works fine, neither do I need a bigger engine. The car weights almost 1.500kg empty (fat fuck!), has 150hp and is sufficiently powered for a beginner noob. Papers say it can do 220 km/h which is 20km/h more than my mother's 2014 1.4 Turbo hatchback. Gotta consider insurance rates and own confidence aswell as costs and time too. I just want to be low and looking cool
changed the air and cabin filters today and removed the headlights for cleaning. Missed the right tools for changing the camshaft sensor, gotta get going tomorrow |

Changed the camshaft sensor, took an hour instead of the expected 30 minutes because I couldn't take off the oil filter due to a missing tool
Also changed the taillights, car looks way more modern now work lamp died in the middle of the work, so I had to use my phone flashlight. Worked too I guess, I could hook it up into the front grille though so that's pretty nice lol engine bay looks like it hasn't been cleaned once! rear right reverse light was lazily changed out, an extra broken bulb was flying around in the rear housing (how can you neglect a car so much?) |

Literally struggles to do a burnout. In the wet. In first. With 195/15s. Not just the engine is garbage lol, I can get in to the car through my trunk even when it's closed. alright some update, replacement sideskirt arrived, bad starting issue hasn't been solved either. Probably crankshaft sensor or ventilation, spark plugs are oily as heck. Tried removing the rust on the fender and primer it for painting later, it looks horrible but I need a new fender soon anyway, has a hole from the rust and is dented (another crash damage hidden )
for now just waiting on parts, readout software, orange blinker sockets for the front, fuel filter, clear side blinkers and rear gas strut for the trunk. Also still waiting for the ebay parts.. |

That place in the sideskirt is a fucking illness in e39's, are you welding it up yourself?

It's not a sideskirt. Anyway, you should take a look at the entire thing all the way to the front, especially around the jacking points.
Oily sparkplugs is often from old/broken valve cover gasket. |

sideskirt/rocker panel/whatever the side thing
got a replacement metal for the front left jack point already. Mate will weld it in, found a garage to rent with the tools I need so I'll tackle that as soon as I got my license to get a 5-day-registration for the car. Right side was welded already but looks ugly, but if it works I don't really care. Defo either crankshaft sensor or the ventilation thing, got symptoms from both. Bad startup, no power until 3.000 RPM, oily spark plugs. Clean idle and no smoke though. Changed the camshaft sensor already because the BMW dealer I got it checked at said it won't run with a bad crank sensor. Yeah, I thought they knew about their cars. For now waiting for the obd reader so I finally know which one of them is bad. on the other hand reconnecting the battery removed one kilometer from the mileage lol |
